Infrared Windows for Switchgear

ElectricIR™ provides professional Infrared Windows for Switchgear to help facilities perform safer, more efficient thermal inspections of critical electrical equipment. Switchgear contains high-energy electrical components where opening an energized enclosure can increase exposure to electrical hazards. An infrared inspection window provides a protected viewing port that allows a certified thermographer to use an infrared camera to inspect internal components while the switchgear enclosure remains closed and guarded.

Switchgear infrared inspection through an IR window allows thermographers to identify abnormal heat patterns at breakers, bus connections, cable terminations, disconnects, and other critical components. Elevated temperatures can indicate loose connections, excessive resistance, overloaded circuits, deteriorating components, or developing electrical faults. Because the inspection can be performed through a fixed viewing location, thermal images can be captured from a consistent angle and distance, making results more useful for trending equipment condition over time.

How Infrared Windows for Switchgear Work

An electrical IR window is installed into the switchgear enclosure at a location selected to provide a thermal view of critical internal components. During an inspection, a certified thermographer views the equipment through the window using an infrared camera without routinely opening the switchgear doors or covers. This non-intrusive inspection approach can help reduce exposure to electrical hazards while allowing equipment to be evaluated under normal operating load conditions.

IR windows are particularly valuable for switchgear that is difficult or hazardous to inspect using traditional open-panel methods. They can become a permanent part of a facility's Infrared Thermography Services program, providing repeatable access for scheduled predictive and preventative maintenance inspections.
